Our Eco Credentials
We recently joined Ryedale Environmental Group and through them, took the opportunity to evaluate our sustainability. In March 2021 our business partnered with some enthusiastic York University students to find ways of reducing our impact on the environment. Although we had already taken steps to improve our sustainability, the students provided some other great suggestions. We had already fitted energy-saving light bulbs, and our boiler has a Nest thermostat to improve efficiency.
There are lots of plants, trees and wildflowers around the cottage, plus bird boxes and feeders to encourage wildlife. We have also left a patch of ground uncut to provide a habitat for insects and other animals. Please be aware that the rabbits dig holes in the ground so it might be uneven in places!
Our Sustainability Efforts Continue
As a result of the sustainability project, we have lots of ideas to continue on our eco journey. Our recycling bin has clear labelling to show what can and cannot be recycled. You’ll notice signage asking you to close the doors while the heating is on too, which helps reduce energy waste.
Many guests look for a property with a hot tub, but if you would rather not use this facility then please let us know as this will save water, energy and chemicals. We do have solar panels that supply electricity to help to heat the water in the hot tub. We plan to add more panels and batteries in the near future to make the best use of the electricity we generate.
Tree Planting
We recently worked with Beech Tree Landscapes, who are based in our village, to re-plant an area of common land a few hundred metres from our house. After consulting with our local councillor and villagers, we decided to plant more than 1oo native species of trees. Ed worked very hard planting them all as it soon became apparent that the land had been used for fly-tipping hardcore and garden waste, and took longer to plant than we first thought. Many of the trees that had been there had died off or blew down in the storm. As well as off-setting some of the carbon created by our business, we hope that local people, our guests and us can enjoy seeing them grow into mature trees.
Supporting Local Businesses
Apart from supporting our local economy, using small, independent local businesses is a way to reduce our carbon footprint. Locally sourced produce means fewer miles. We buy many cleaning products from The Beecham Weigh, and we order our biscuits from Botham’s of Whitby
About a week before your arrival we send a link by email or message which contains lots of information about local shops and places you might like to visit. Malton is known as “Yorkshire’s Food Capital” thanks to the abundance of local food producers found in this rural area. There is a monthly food market, and an annual food festival.
Leave the Car at Home
If you don’t use a car, we are still accessible. Whilst rural bus services aren’t the best, we do have a service that runs just half a mile from us. The bus will take you to Malton, York or Scarborough. The village store, pubs, butchers, and fish and chip shop are within walking distance, as are Scampston Hall and Wolds Way Lavender. There is also a cycle path, with lots of good routes nearby. Additionally. there are also lots of off-road walks directly from the front door.
