We thought you’d like to know a bit about us -Pauline and Jim Lowry. I manage the day-to-day running of Rose Cottage, whilst Jim helps with the odd maintenance job. Jim is Irish, and I was born in London. We moved to Thorpe Bassett in 2003 and have never looked back. We both love the ever-changing scenery: the clear, frosty nights where you can see thousands of stars, the green hills in spring and summer that we see from our kitchen window, and the amazing colours of autumn. Our 3 children grew up here, and still live and work locally. I never take my surroundings for granted and want to share our area with our visitors. Rose Cottage opened in 2009, and we added a shepherd’s hut ten years later. We hope you’ll love North Yorkshire as much as us, and wish you a fantastic stay.
Location
Rose Cottage is in the peaceful village of Thorpe Bassett, near Malton in rural North Yorkshire; it’s just 1/2 mile from the A64, which is the main road from York and Scarborough, about half an hour drive in each direction. There’s lots to do in and around the area. Take a look at places to visit around North Yorkshire
Inside the cottage
The cottage sleeps up to 4 people; we have a double bedroom, plus a smaller room offering a single bed with a pull-out bed underneath. Downstairs is a shower room featuring a powerful shower in a cubicle, and an open-plan living area. The kitchen is well equipped, although we have removed non-essential items to make cleaning simpler. Please ask us if you need any extra dishes or pans. There is a dishwasher, gas cooker, and a fridge with a freezer section and a microwave. We have a comfortable seating area and an internet-ready TV. The cottage also offers wi-fi, although if you are used to a high-speed connection you might find our rural service a little slower.
Children welcome
We have a travel cot, high chair, and a stair gate to save you from bringing unnecessary equipment. Also, there are window locks on the upstairs windows for added safety. There are lots of child-friendly activities to do locally. A walk around our active farming community of Thorpe Bassett will often provide opportunities to see cows, horses, pigs and sheep.
Outside the cottage
Rose Cottage has an enclosed, private garden so you can relax in the knowledge that your dogs are safe. We have a small patio, with a bistro table and chairs, and recently we’ve added a gas barbecue. The private hot tub is large enough for four people, and we check the chemical levels daily. We also deep clean it and change the water between guests. The cottage is next to a small paddock that is used by our shepherd’s hut guests. Find out more about Pheasant’s Roost shepherd’s hut.
There’s no smoking and vaping in the cottage but you make smoke in the grounds.
Dogs welcome
You can bring up to 2 dogs, but please don’t leave them unattended other than for short periods. Malton is a really dog-friendly town, which means that many cafes and restaurants allow them in. Additionally, we can direct you to lots of walks and dog-friendly beaches, and even dog-sitting services, so there are plenty of options available. Guests often forget their pets bowls or bedding, however, we do have spares available, plus dog towels if you need them.
Our Green Credentials
Next to Rose Cottage is a paddock that provides habitats for wildlife. A corner of our paddock grows wild; The nettles attract butterflies, and the wildflowers attract bees. Additionally, we have a number of mature trees that support bats, birds and other insects, as well as a few bird boxes around our grounds too. Pheasants, partridges and rabbits are frequent visitors. Look out for Buzzards too.
A washing machine and small freezer for guest use has been installed behind the hot tub. Please use the quick wash and cool settings, and if the weather is fine then please use the line to dry your laundry. Finally, we can also supply ice if you need it.
We’d encourage you to use our compost bin and recycling facilities where possible. You’ll find Eco washing up liquid, and eco products are used too for cleaning where possible, as well as FSC approved toilet paper.
Our property, Oak Lodge, has solar panels fitted that feed the electricity supply for Rose Cottage too. Secondly, there’s a Nest thermostat on the heating, as well as low-energy light bulbs to save energy. External lights are on sensors too.
